INSPIRING HEALTHY THOUGHTS
Terry Hedman
Dimensions of Learning Academy
Getting the message out about better health really is kid stuff in Kenosha, Wisconsin. That's because students at Dimensions of Learning Academy have a healthy message read to them every morning by a fellow student. It kicks off the morning with a focus on taking action and encourages healthy thinking all day long.
How did they get started? K-8 Physical Education Teacher/K-5 Resource Teacher Terry Hedman was inspired herself after learning about the SUBWAY RANDOM ACTS OF FITNESS FOR KIDS™ program.
"Winning from a contest is the icing on the cake," she says. "It sparks most of my students into writing more willingly but I am thankful for all of the supporters out there, like SUBWAY®, that encourage young writers to be creative and expressive."
Presenting "Moves of the Day" was also a perfect tie-in to the American Heart Association's Hoops for Heart and Jump Rope for Heart events. The entire school, Grades K-8, participated to raise funds for heart health.
By encouraging kids to start a "Move"ment, Dimensions of Learning Academy continues to motivate students to think for themselves, while learning how to improve their nutrition and add exercise to their daily lives. As the kids wrote in their rap song: "Eat Right, win the fight! Heart Disease take flight!"
